(Pope Francis, Twitter, March 30, 2018)SO THEY TOOK JESUS, AND, CARRYING THE CROSS HIMSELF, HE WENT OUT TO WHAT IS CALLED THE PLACE OF THE SKULL, IN HEBREW, GOLGATHA. THERE THEY CRUCIFIED HIM AND WITH HIM TWO OTHERS, ONE ON EITHER SIDE, WITH JESUS IN THE MIDDLE.
Today, please join me reflecting on the ‘seven last words’ spoken by Jesus on the cross. Let us ask ourselves, ‘What is Jesus saying to me?’‘Father, forgive them, they know not what they do’ (Lk 23:34).‘Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise’ (Lk 23:43).‘Woman, behold your son…Behold, your mother’ (Jn 19:26-27).‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ (Mk 15:34).‘I thirst’ (Jn 19:38).‘It is finished’ (Jn 19:30).‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit’ (Lk 23:46).AFTER THIS, JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA, SECRETLY A DISCIPLE OF JESUS FOR FEAR OF THE JEWS, ASKED PILATE IF HE COULD REMOVE THE BODY OF JESUS. AND PILATE PERMITTED IT. NICODEMUS, THE ONE WHO HAD FIRST COME TO HIM AT NIGHT, ALSO CAME BRINGING A MIXTURE OF MYRRH AND ALOES WEIGHING ABOUT ONE HUNDRED POUNDS.
