Feast of the Presentation

February 2, 2021

“A light to be a revelation to the nations and to be a glory to your people Israel.” This verse is sung to commemorate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the Temple in Jerusalem.  St Luke in Chapter 2 of his Gospel tells us that the Prophet Simeon and the Prophetess Anna recognize the infant Christ as the long awaited Messiah.  Simeon then takes the Child in his arms and proclaims:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. (Luke: 2:29-32)”
With Simeon, we commemorate the discovery of Christ’s light in the Temple by processing with lit candles and each proclaiming: “I have seen your mercy, O God, in the midst of your temple. (Psalm 48)” as she places her candle on the altar.
A very beautiful celebration that has a special place in Cisterican liturgy.
